The Advertising Standard Council Of India (ASCI) have decided to act against 81 advertisements by online gaming firms for violating advertising standards and guidelines which require the ads to not be aimed at minors, proposing online gaming as a possible source of income for livelihood or link it to success. The ASCI released guidelines related to real money gaming which were effective from 15th December 2020. Since then, the ASCI have kept a close on all advertisements made by various online gaming platforms and asked them to carry a disclaimer regarding the risk of financial loss and the addictive nature of such games. According to Mint, the ASCI have found out that there were 81 advertisements that were against the prescribed guidelines. 75% of the complaints received were from the end consumers themselves while the rest was taken by ASCI suo motu. Out of the 81 total complaints, 15 advertisements were voluntarily withdrawn by the advertisers after receiving communication from the ASCI while in another 27 cases, the complaint was lodged and subsequently, the advertiser had removed the advertisements before they received communication from the ASCI. Two of those advertisers decided to contest the case but the decision was upheld according to the ASCI code! There are still 37 cases advertisements under process with the regulators already asking for explanations! We too are keeping a close eye on such advertisements and, through our association with TAM Media Research, we are monitoring the digital space more efficiently. With such steps, we hope to make advertisements for online gaming for real money winnings more transparent and safer for consumers.” ASCI decided not to divulge with the names of the advertisers but the majority of the complaints received were from ads on Instagram and YouTube! Hopefully, the advertisers can retract the ads and follow the guidelines specified by the ASCI in the future.
