Britt Reid is gone from the Chiefs as 5-year old Ariel remains in coma
By admin | | 0 Comments |

Britt Reid, son of KC head coach Andy Reid, is no longer with the organization, after causing an accident that left a 5-year old girl in a coma.Image: Getty ImagesOne week after Britt Reid, Kansas City Chiefs assistant coach and Andy Reid’s son, caused a car accident and admitted to police officers that he had been drinking, many people are left wondering if there will be ramifications from the NFL and/or the Chiefs organization. Conveniently enough for the Chiefs, Britt Reid’s contract was expiring, so they might feel like they are off the hook. Britt Reid is no longer an employee of the Kansas City Chiefs. This feels like the Chad Wheeler situation with the Seahawks, where the Seahawks are essentially saying “He’s no longer with the team, so it’s not our problem. Best wishes.” That said, while I would hope that the Chiefs organization would speak loud and clear on this issue, it would feel hollow and disingenuous coming from a team that has made the clear decision to prioritize winning above off the field issues. No team has a track record of domestic violence as ripe and impalpable as the Chiefs, including past employee Kareem Hunt and current employees Tyreek Hill, DeAndre Baker (who they just signed yesterday), and Frank Clark. At least the league is investigating Britt Reid’s case under their personal conduct policy, I guess. The grossness and wide-ranging league issues aside, it is imperative that we do not lose sight of the fact that a five-year-old is still fighting for her life. An update as of February 11 from the GoFundMe created for the family of Ariel Young, which has now raised over $450,000:“Hello again,Thank you to everyone who continues to pray for Ariel and support the family in a time like this. She remains in a coma and there are no changes today. I’m hopeful that the next time I update this page it’s with better news. G/O Media may get a commissionWhen sending a message to this page if you don’t mind, can you please include where you are from, I’d like to print the messages out and show Ariel one day when she is older so she can see the huge outpouring of love and support she has from all over the world. Thank you all again.Tiffany Verhulst and family ❤️”I truly hope that the league will look into this, step up and support the family of the victim and offer help. And then look to make changes to its standards for off-the-field issues. I hope it will, but I’m doubtful. .

At Trevor Bauer’s Dodger intro, media hold his misogynist feet to … a cozy, warm, crackling fire
By admin | | 0 Comments |

Trevor Bauer really didn’t need the mic because he didn’t say anything.Screenshot: MLB/LA DodgersI can’t sum this up any better than Craig Calcattera did, so let’s start there:Trevor Bauer had his introductory press conference/Zoom meeting yesterday with the Dodgers and assembled baseball media. And we have to give them a small amount of credit (the precise amount, to quote Alan Arkin from the movie Argo, would be the buffalo shit on a nickel) that they even bothered to ask Bauer about his past behavior on social media. To review, Bauer has been a misogynist, transphobic, harassing pig in the past. But previously, people like Bauer haven’t even been asked the question. Take Tom Brady and Antonio Brown this past Super Bowl, for example. So Bauer addressed it. Barely. And not even really. It was the most cursory once-over you could imagine. “All the conversations I’ve had with people across all walks of life over the last couple of years and all the things I’ve learned —I can say that I have learned from those,” Bauer said after being presented with his No. 27 jersey during a virtual news conference from Dodger Stadium. “I’ve spent a lot of time talking to other people to try to understand other perspectives, and I’m doing my best to be better, as I do in all walks of my life. I don’t think that it makes any sense to dive into specific issues in this forum, but I am committed to being better on social media, being better on the field, being better in the clubhouse, being better in life in general.”And this boilerplate, addressing-nothing answer didn’t generate a follow-up question, a note of caution, criticism, anything. What did Bauer learn? Whom did he talk to? What perspectives? It absolutely makes sense to dive into specifics, but the reason he doesn’t want to is most likely because he hasn’t done jack shit about it. Why would he? He just signed for $40 million this year. Where are the consequences? You can be sure he’ll be back on his bullshit the next time some woman sneezes on him on Twitter. And that check will still cash. And yet it gets headlines like this on ESPN, as if he’s turned a new leaf. Or this on MLB.com, as if it was enough. At least that piece made mention of his actions in the past, while also including his non-apology. Here’s at-the-ready stooge Jon Heyman to champion those attending the press conference, even though again, Bauer said nothing, there were no follow-up questions, Bauer took no responsibility, and the article Heyman is retweeting is saying as much. It feels like the smallest amount of effort to actually question anyone about this kind of behaviour is treated like William Wallace conquering the English, merely so the baseball press doesn’t have to do it again. G/O Media may get a commissionAnd GM Andrew Friedman was no better. “The most important thing is every teammate we talked to, all the feedback we got from every organization he was with, was not only incredibly positive in terms of the type of teammate he is, but also in terms of the impact that he makes on each organization,” Friedman said when asked whether he believes he might have alienated some of the team’s fans by signing Bauer. “I think the talent is pretty obvious. But I also think that from a cultural standpoint, from continuing to strive to get better at everything we do, I actually think he is gonna be a tremendous asset in that. It’s not for me to speak for Trevor, but in our conversations he’s alluded to past mistakes he’s made. And you know what, we’re all gonna make mistakes. What’s important for me is how people — including myself, when I make mistakes — is how we internalize it, and what our thoughts are about it going forward. From our standpoint, it was important to have that conversation. And we came away from it feeling good about it. Now, obviously, time will tell. But I feel like he is going to be a tremendous add, not just on the field but in the clubhouse, in the community, and that’s obviously why we’re sitting here.”Friedman, like Bauer, says nothing here. Did he talk to the women Bauer has harassed? Fuck no, he didn’t. Did he talk to any women about Bauer? Nope. But he talked to Bauer’s former teammates? What are they going to tell you? Are they the ones whose lives he made hell? As for thoughts going forward, to repeat myself ad nauseum, Bauer didn’t say anything about what he’ll do going forward other than “be better.” Hell, that’s one step shy of Melania’s meaningless “Be Best” campaign against cyberbullying when her husband was the poster child for it. “Be better” could mean anything. And because of that, it means nothing. But hey, he actually had to address it with a nothing-burger, so everyone in baseball media suddenly thinks they’re the Woodward and Bernstein of sexism.  .

Put a mask on, Tom Brady
By admin | | 0 Comments |

Despite having family members nearly die due to COVID-19, Tom Brady continues to go maskless, Image: Getty ImagesTom Brady has won so many Lombardi Trophies that he just doesn’t seem to care anymore. It must be like being so rich that you can have whatever and however many cars you want, and just hand the keys to your McLaren to your teenager. After all, if something happens to it, it’s not a big deal – you have another one in the offsite air hanger that you use as a garage. Brady also apparently has never been drunk before. Doing his best college-kid-on-spring-break-in-Florida impression, he appeared quite sauced during the Super Bowl celebratory boat race thing that they decided to do in Tampa Bay. So much so, in fact, that he decided to chuck the Lombardi Trophy from his boat to a waiting Rob Gronkowski on another boat. I could write a dumb joke about “oh look, another Super Bowl touchdown pass from Brady to Gronk,” but I won’t. So played out. While it’s all fun and games to joke about his carelessness with a trophy, it’s also complete and total bullshit that there wasn’t a single mask to be seen. Apparently, he’s as careless with the trophy as he is with COVID. His father was in a life-and-death battle with COVID, and his mother is a cancer survivor. Brady’s father recently said that he wants his son to wear a mask more often. Apparently, Tom didn’t feel like listening to his father, as exemplified by not only his boat party shenanigans, but also by him arriving for the Super Bowl without wearing a mask. Oh, and that time he didn’t wear one after the NFC Championship Game. Or the time he got busted for not wearing one at Bucs’ workouts.Brady has demonstrated, continuously, that he is living in his own little world, doing whatever he damn well pleases, detached and unbothered by social issues, racism, the health of the community he lives in, and the health of his own family. Read the room, Tom. Your dad almost dies. Your mom is high risk. Wear a damn mask. .

K.C. coach Britt Reid, Andy Reid’s son, involved in car accident; reportedly told cops he’d been drinking
By admin | | 0 Comments |

Britt Reid previously pled guilty to DUI in 2008.Screenshot: K.C. ChiefsKansas City Chiefs assistant coach, Britt Reid, son of head coach Andy Reid, was in a car accident on Thursday night that left two young children injured. One of the children, a five-year-old, has life-threatening injuries. According to reports, Reid told the police that he had been drinking, and a search warrant that was filed after the accident indicates that the KCPD officer said they could smell “a moderate odor of alcoholic beverages,” and that Britt Reid’s eyes were bloodshot. The accident occurred around 9 p.m. on Interstate 435 near the Chiefs’ practice facility at the Truman Sports Complex.“The organization has been made aware of a multi-vehicle accident involving Outside Linebackers Coach, Britt Reid,” the Chiefs said in a statement Friday. “We are in the process of gathering information, and we will have no further comment at this time. Our thoughts and prayers are with everyone involved.”The Reid family has been battling substance abuse issues for years, and this is not the first instance of drunk driving involving Britt Reid. In 2008, while already in jail on a road rage charge, Britt Reid, then 22, pleaded guilty to DUI and drug charges stemming from a separate incident. Britt’s older brother, Garrett, was also sentenced in 2008 for an unrelated DUI crash that injured another motorist. Garrett also faced charges after he smuggled nearly 90 prescription pills into prison the week he was sentenced. In 2012, Garrett died of a heroin overdose. In 2009, after his arrest, Britt joined his father on his Eagles staff as an intern and followed his father to Kansas City, a move that perhaps signaled a desire to keep Britt close as he battled his addiction. Britt has been on the Kansas City coaching staff since 2013, and was promoted to assistant defensive line coach in 2015. He moved to outside linebackers coach after the 2018 season. In a touch of tragic irony, had the Big Game not been taking place amid a pandemic, the Chiefs organization would already have been in Tampa days earlier. Needless to say, Andy Reid will once again be coaching – this time in the Super Bowl – while dealing with off-field distractions surrounding his family. .
