The home stadiums of the Dallas Cowboys and Houston Texans will be opened up to serve as COVID-19 vaccination super sites in the coming weeks.
According to Michael Gehlken of the Dallas Morning News, the White House COVID-19 task force confirmed this week that AT&T Stadium (Cowboys) and NRG Stadium (Texans) will open as vaccination sites on Feb. 22.
“Together, these sites will be capable of administering more than 10,000 shots in arms a day,” the task force indicated.
Fair Park in South Dallas, home of the Texas State Fair, will also serve as a vaccination site, per Gehlken.
The announcement follows NFL commissioner Roger Goodell offering the use of the league’s 30 available stadiums to the U.S. government for vaccination sites.
In a letter to President Joe Biden last week, Goodell noted how many NFL stadiums could quickly get vaccination sites set up due to how the arenas previously served as COVID-19 testing centers and voting sites.
“The NFL and our 32 member clubs are committed to doing our part to ensure that vaccines are as widely accessible in our communities as possible,” Goodell’s letter read in part, per NFL.com. “To that end, each NFL team will make its stadium available for mass vaccinations of the general public in coordination with local, state, and federal health officials. This is currently being done at seven NFL stadiums today. We can expand our efforts to stadiums across the nation more effectively because many of our clubs have offered their facilities previously as COVID testing centers as well as election sites over the past several months.”
An NFL spokesperson told CNN last week that seven teams have vaccination sites already activated “at or near their stadium.” The Arizona Cardinals (State Farm Stadium), Atlanta Falcons (Mercedes-Benz Stadium), Baltimore Ravens (M&T Bank Stadium), Carolina Panthers (Bank of America Stadium), Houston Texans (NRG Stadium), Miami Dolphins (Hard Rock Stadium) and New England Patriots (Gillette Stadium) were the teams identified.
Given NRG Stadium was among the NFL stadiums cited by the spokesperson, arrangements must have been already underway to make it a vaccination super site ahead of Wednesday’s official announcement.
