‘England spinners need control to go with wickets’
By admin | | 0 Comments |

Moeen Ali took eight wickets in the match but struggled for control in the first innings (Pic credit - BCCI) Nasser Hussain reflects on England's defeat in the second Test and believes despite the spinners continuing to take wickets, they need to be able to offer Joe Root more control, while the batsmen can learn from India's efforts on turning tracks... England were completely outplayed in pretty much every department on a very difficult, but not impossible, pitch.I think the toss was more important in the first game when the pitch was flat for two days. Here it started turning after about an hour so, obviously, it was important but not as important. England need to dust themselves off, not moan about the pitch, the toss, DRS, umpires or whatever and just try and rectify and improve in the areas they were found short - and knowing this side, I think that is exactly what they will do. 0:56 England captain Joe Root says his squad must not get too down about their heavy defeat in the second Test against India England captain Joe Root says his squad must not get too down about their heavy defeat in the second Test against India For me, even though they got wickets again and continue to get wickets, the biggest issue is the consistency in the spin department. It is not just this Test match, if you look back at Sri Lanka, Jack Leach and Dom Bess got wickets but Bess, in particular, was very inconsistent with his length. In this game, Moeen Ali got eight wickets in the match and bowled well at times - he bowled some real beauties, like the one to bowl Virat Kohli in the first innings and got him out twice in the game - but Mo himself will admit that in that first innings, he didn't quite have the control and 4-128 is not what you're looking for on such a minefield for the spinners. If you compare that to how India's two spinners bowled and the control of Ravichandran Ashwin, they didn't do anything magical, they just jammed it in there ball after ball. Ravichandran Ashwin was named player of the match after starring with bat and ball (Pic credit - BCCI) I can't remember a period of four Test matches where I've seen more full tosses from England's off-spinners, Bess and Mo, this winter. Wrist-spin is a difficult art and you can give people like Kuldeep Yadav and Adil Rashid a bit of leeway, but a finger spinner should have control of their length.Moeen has some very good reasons for it, he hasn't played a Test since the first Ashes match at Edgbaston in 2019, played very little red-ball cricket, comes back and has Covid on tour then is straight into a Test match. He got better as the game progressed, he bowled better in the second innings. But if you're asking me the main reason why England lost the Test match, I would say if you look at India's main two spinners - Ashwin and Axar Patel - they were more consistent than the England spinners. Dom Bess was left out of the second Test and consistency has been his main issue this winter (Pic credit - BCCI) People will say, 'hold on, you only got 130 and 160, what about the batsmen?' The way that Axar and Ashwin bowled, when you're coming in on day two, three and four, that was about as difficult as it gets batting; turn and bounce from just about every length and every delivery, the sweep shot became riskier. It wasn't a case of which shots you could and couldn't play, it was about which shots had what percentage risk; in the last game the sweep shot was low risk, in this game with the way it was bouncing and exploding, it was high risk as Joe Root found out in the first innings, Ollie Pope and Ben Foakes in the second. You have to realise that it is riskier than the last game but you still have to play it because there was always a ball with your name on. It's just it as risky to stand there and try to defend. What I thought they could have done more of in the first innings is use their feet, try and get to the pitch of the ball, try and smother it.They tried that in the second innings, they were more proactive but by then it was too late so plenty to work on. Root battled in England's second innings before falling to Axar Patel (Pic credit - BCCI) I didn't watch any of that batting and think 'oh my goodness, what are they doing!?' I watched it and thought it looked extremely difficult - that doesn't mean you give up or you don't try, Root battled hard in that second innings and Mo at the end played some shots - but you have to find a way.You have to be busy on pitches like that, you can't just sit in and defend; it is only a matter of time if you just try and defend on a pitch like that. Live Pakistan Super League February 20, 2021, 1:50pm Live on I can't be overly critical of England's batting. They can learn though; India had a batsman in Rohit Sharma who scored nearly 200 runs on it and they had a bowling all-rounder in Ashwin who got a second-innings hundred on it so it was not impossible. England have got to look at that and ask what Rohit and Ashwin did so well to try and learn and improve. There has got to be a strong attitude and a mindset now. When you go to India, you expect to get a pitch like that and you may get another one, we don't know what Ahmedabad is going to be like under the lights. Rohit Sharma showed it was possible to score runs on a very challenging Chennai pitch (Pic credit - BCCI) But one of the pitches in the last two Tests may be another dustbowl and England have got to work out how they are going to play and improve on it.With this England side, let's not get too up when they win and too down when they lose, they had won six in a row away from home and they are a side that's improving but this was a chastening defeat. It was about as tricky as it gets for an English cricketer but that's what the challenge is playing away from home, the same way as it is when you go to Australia and we used to have to cope with the bounce at Perth or when players come to England and have to cope with the moving Dukes ball - it is part of being an all-round cricketer and occasionally you get pitches like that. But even so, the major point I would make - and this is not a criticism of the individual bowlers, not of Mo, in particular - is about the consistency of the spin bowling over the winter. They have taken wickets, I can't stress that enough, and their stats are absolutely fine but Joe can't set fields to it because there is always a full toss or a short ball to think about. Axar Patel had a debut to remember as he claimed a second-innings five-for (Pic credit - BCCI) And just as a batsman, when you're playing Ashwin and Axar and not getting a ball to hit and you're going nowhere, it just takes a full toss or a long hop and suddenly you're 15 or 20 and feeling so much more comfortable. India aren't giving England's batsmen that but has been the case when England have been bowling. It is not just about the three England spinners we've seen this winter, it is a more general point about English cricket and what we need to do to help our spinners to become more consistent. When Somerset produce a pitch at Taunton like the one we've just seen in Chennai, they get docked points, then there is where and when we play our red-ball cricket. These guys Axar and Ashwin have been brought up bowling over after over after over whereas we don't play the right type of cricket at the right time of year to give our spinners the right type of pitches. They have to take some responsibility as well, the batsmen too after a defeat like that, but it was very difficult.Follow text commentary of the day-night third Test between India and England in Ahmedabad on skysports.com and the Sky Sports app from 8.30am on Wednesday, February 24. .

Kohli: Gritty batting made the difference
By admin | | 0 Comments |

India bowled England out for 164 in their second innings, with Axar Patel taking 5-60 and Ravi Ashwin 3-53 to secure a 317-run victory and level the series 1-1; the third Test begins in Ahmedabad on February 24 Last Updated: 16/02/21 9:32am Virat Kohli ended his losing streak as India captain in emphatic style as his side crushed England by 317 runs in Chennai (Pic credit - BCCI) Victorious India captain Virat Kohli felt his side's "grit and determination" with the bat was decisive after they overwhelmed England by 317 runs to win the second Test in Chennai. India's batsmen mastered the crumbling pitch well enough on the third day to score 286 in their second innings and build an unassailable lead before bowling the tourists out for just 164 as they levelled the four-match series 1-1.While Moeen Ali's late flourish for 43 off 18 balls represented England's highest score in the match, India were indebted to centuries in each innings from Rohit Sharma and Ravi Ashwin respectively, as well as three other players passing 50. "Our application with the bat was outstanding in this game," said Kohli. "The conditions were challenging for both sides but we showed more application, grit and determination to battle it out. Virat Kohli, who scored 62 in India's second innings, was one of five home batsmen to pass 50 during the second Test "We didn't panic out there, looking at the amount of turn and bounce - we trusted our defence and we scored 600 runs total. If we put up that kind of performance, then we know our bowlers are going to do the job in home conditions."We believed we could get runs on that pitch and it wasn't unfair if the toss went either way. I don't think on that pitch it would have mattered very much."If you look at our second innings on day three, we still applied ourselves and got almost 300. Both teams had to apply themselves and that's what you want in Test cricket from the first session onwards."Ashwin, who finished with overall figures of 8-96, was named player of the match but it was fellow spinner Axar Patel who grabbed the limelight in England's second innings as he took 5-60 on his Test debut. Rishabh Pant stumped Dan Lawrence to reduce England to 66-4 on the final morning in Chennai (Pic credit - BCCI) Wicketkeeper Rishabh Pant, who had struck an unbeaten 58 in India's first innings, also impressed with the gloves as he pulled off stumpings to dismiss Dan Lawrence and Moeen on the final day."He's worked a lot physically in (the tour of) Australia," said Kohli. "He's shed a lot of weight and become quicker on his feet and that's showing. The way he kept on this pitch, with so much turn and bounce, was a credit to him for working so hard."With a super-skilled batsman like him, you won't really see the difference in batting, but when he moves with the gloves you can see the difference in his reactions and reflexes."We want him to keep improving as a keeper and get stronger and stronger with his skill sets because we understand how much value he brings to the team."The India skipper indicated that left-armer Axar would retain his place for the remaining two Tests in the series, which both take place at Ahmedabad. Left-arm spinner Axar Patel marked his Test debut with figures of 5-60 in the second innings (Pic credit - BCCI) The first of those is a day-night encounter, beginning a week on Wednesday, when paceman Jasprit Bumrah is expected to return to the India line-up after being rested for the second Chennai Test."It's a special moment for Axar and I'm very happy for him," added Kohli. "He would have played the first game as well if he didn't have that niggle and he was very keen to step onto the field. "As a left-arm spinner, when you get the kind of pitch that's turning square, he was all smiles and he couldn't wait to get the ball in his hand."I hope he builds it up from here and has a strong couple of games going forward, so that he's always in the mix to play cricket for India." .

Remembering Leon Spinks’ forgotten upset over Ali 42 years ago today
By admin | | 0 Comments |

Did you know Leon Spinks once upset Muhammad Ali?Image: APLeon Spinks passed away on February 5 due to prostate cancer at the age of 67. On this date 42 years ago, he starred in one of sports’ larger-than-life upsets over one of the most unforgettable boxers to have ever stepped into a ring. If you compile your own Tale of the Tape retrospective, without any context, it wouldn’t make any sense. But when you watch Leon Spinks’ seemingly improbable outboxing of Muhammad Ali on this date in 1978, it’s a tale that tells itself.Perhaps Ali, who was 36 at the time of the fight, underestimated the 1976 Olympic Gold Medalist, who had 50 fewer pro fights than the champ and was 12 years his junior at just 24 years old. Watching the much-younger Spinks outwork, outland, and outclass Ali, then the WBC and WBA World Heavyweight Champion, you could see the classic unfolding of an ambitious challenger outpointing a legendary titleholder who owned the division for the better part of two decades. Still, it was clear that Ali was nearing the end of his once-illustrious career. So much so, in fact, that longtime Ali cornerman and physician Ferdie Pacheco, who was on commentary, reiterated his desire for Ali to retire during Round 1 of the bout.Ali, at 55 wins and 2 losses, with 37 knockouts, ventured into the Hilton Hotel in Las Vegas as a 10-1 favorite. His idiosyncratic glow was still vibrant upon entry, but it was clear he wasn’t quite the same Ali who dethroned Sonny Liston in 1964, who devoured George Foreman in Zaire in 1974, and who derailed Joe Frazier in the Thrilla in Manila in 1975. He was even 17 months removed from defeating Ken Norton in Yankee Stadium in 1976. But even still, Spinks (6-0-1, 5 KOs) wasn’t supposed to arrive so emphatically. The challenger was four months removed from a draw with heavyweight journeyman Scott DeLoux, who entered his bout with Spinks, who was 5-0 at the time, with a record of 21-6-1, with 13 KOs. Spinks weighed 27 pounds fewer than Ali’s 224 on that night. Numerically, his split decision victory is not in a historical context matching Buster Douglas knocking out Mike Tyson, the 31-year-anniversary of which passed last Thursday. But Spinks defeating Ali remains an instrumental piece in the list of the 20th century’s biggest sports upsets. And it came at a time when boxing was still one of the most popular sports in America, with the fight airing on CBS for millions of viewers. “In that fight, everything clicked,” Top Rank promoter Bob Arum said of the bout. “[Spinks] came in with a game plan, and he beat Ali. It wasn’t that Ali wasn’t at his best, but Leon shocked everybody with how good Leon was.”G/O Media may get a commissionPerhaps it gets unfairly lost in the context of historical upsets because Ali immediately won their rematch seven months later — Ali winning the heavyweight title an unprecedented third time. The loss not only ended Spinks’ time as champion, but was the final victory of Ali’s historic career. Spinks’ career lasted another 17 years, though he only earned one other heavyweight title shot, losing to Larry Holmes in 1981 by TKO in Round 3. (He also lost a cruiserweight title shot to Dwight Muhammad Qawi in 1986.) It wasn’t Douglas-Tyson, Ali-Foreman, or Andy Ruiz versus Anthony Joshua in terms of upsets. However, it still deserves its place and remembrance as one of the incredible feats in heavyweight boxing history, and perhaps in all of sports. .

Poker in Print: Poker with presence: Unlocking the final 15% (2020)
By admin | | 0 Comments |

Some poker books that apply to strategy look at the specifics of your poker game and break them down bit by bit, building them up with stronger foundations. Either that or starting afresh, giving poker players new knowledge to fight with. What about a poker strategy book, however, that presumes the poker player in question already has the first 85% of the game taken care of?This week, Jason Su, the author of Poker with Presence: Unlocking the Final 15%, spoke on Twitter about the power of Fedor Holz’s magnetizing presence at the table and how it was the inspiration for him writing this book, published last May independently by the author himself. The notion of having a presence at the poker table is, of course, both an elusive one and something that some might argue is counter-productive. Some of the best players fade into the felt but make millions. So why should a poker player want to have a magnetic table presence?Well, the book goes a long way to explaining exactly this and can be used effectively as a guidebook to feeling comfortable at the poker table. Enjoying playing poker can benefit the player immensely and Su’s book is given some glowing references by a couple of really prominent voices in the industry.Matt Berkey said of the author: “I’ve had the pleasure of working alongside Jason and I promise his wealth of knowledge on emotional intelligence and its application in a risk-based business is an untapped, hidden edge that few explore. Can’t recommend his work enough.”He’s not the only player to throw his weight behind Su’s work. Tommy Angelo, who we spoke to about his YouTube series with Lee Jones, Poker Simple, as well as dissecting his own legendary poker book, Elements of Poker, was happy to recommend the book. Angelo said, “I would recommend this book to anyone who wants to improve at poker, and anything else.”High praise indeed. While Jason Su has been a successful poker player, this is his first published book, but it doesn’t read like it for a second. We were really impressed with the arguments put forward and anecdotal and evidentiary points that contribute to the volume. There’s a lot more to come from Su in writing about poker, we’re sure, and for anyone considering how they can add that comfort and ‘X Factor’ to a successful poker game, this could be the perfect book to pick up and dive into whenever you need a pick-me-up.Whether you want some quick advice on improving your own table presence or want to look deeper into mindfulness, exercises and concepts that you won’t read in your regular poker strategy book, you should take a look at buying Jason Su’s Poker with Presence right here.

Neville on Man Utd’s problem at the back
By admin | | 0 Comments |

After Victor Lindelof was outmuscled by West Brom's Mbaye Diagne in Manchester United's 1-1 draw at the Hawthorns on Sunday, Gary Neville sees it as confirmation of the team's defensive weaknesses."I don't think the discussions we're having now are anything new," Neville told Monday Night Football. "We said at the start of the season that Manchester United needed a centre-back, and that there were question marks over the goalkeeper. "If you look at the goal against West Brom, it's not going to take those feelings away. They were taken back into the box with Diagne fighting with Lindelof, and West Brom keep the ball alive. Sam Allardyce will have worked on this all week."He'd have worked on positions in wide areas, and both Maguire and Lindelof don't shift up. They don't move their feet three, four, five yards. They never do and they have to do it. If they don't start doing it, they're never going to get to a point where they're going to win the league."Going back 10 years it was the same - you've got to be aggressive in getting out your box. What happens is Lindelof gets pinned. He got pinned by a player who's stronger than him, who outmuscles him and who bullies him. Once you're in that position, it's a nightmare. "There will be people who will say it's a foul. It's never a foul. It's never a foul at all. It's a brilliant header. Lindelof is too deep and is outmuscled. He's fighting with the striker. 3:07 FREE TO WATCH: Highlights from West Brom's draw with Manchester United "When I played centre-back for United, which would be around 10 to 15 games a season, there was always a game where physically I just couldn't handle it. I've got two goals I can remember which stick in my mind as massive learning experiences. "The first was against Les Ferdinand [QPR, December 1994]. Les was brilliant in the air and I was like Lindelof yesterday. He got up early and I was trying to fight him but I had no chance."The second one I remember was against Alan Shearer at Old Trafford [Newcastle, January 2002]. Shearer knew what he was doing. He has a similar height to Ferdinand, and I think Lindelof finds himself in this position quite a bit where he gets put under pressure like I was with that goal where I wasn't tight enough."Lindelof does struggle aerially, whereas Maguire struggles when the ball is played in behind him and he has someone running at him one-on-one."A look at Manchester United's great centre-back partnerships of Steve Bruce and Gary Pallister in the 1990s and Nemanja Vidic and Rio Ferdinand from the subsequent decade, shows that the pairings had remarkably similar records when playing alongside Peter Schmeichel and Edwin van der Sar respectively. The earlier trio averaged 2.2 points per game together and so did the later combination. David de Gea, Lindelof and Maguire are averaging 1.8 points per game together. United's legendary trios also conceded far fewer than one goal per game in the Premier League - something not true of the current group. "If you look back at the best centre-back pairings in the Premier League Manchester United have had - the relationship between them and the goalkeeper is critical if you are to win the Premier League."If you look at Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic, they had a midfield in front of them of Paul Scholes, Michael Carrick, Ryan Giggs and Cristiano Ronaldo. There's not really a defender amongst them."When you look at this pair now of Lindelof and Maguire, you could put the 1.8 points per game down to the fact they're playing in a weaker team, but they concede a goal a game. Even with Fred and Scott McTominay in front of them. They've got two defensive midfielders sat right in front of them and they don't move."The key thing is that only one of the last 20 Premier League champions have conceded at least one goal per game. That tells you about these three of De Gea, Lindelof and Maguire. To win titles, that triangle of goalkeeper and two centre-backs need to be as solid as a rock."They need to be dominant and these three aren't dominant. The goalkeeper's not dominant at the moment, even though I thought he did OK on Sunday, and the two centre-backs are not dominant. They concede too many goals and if you concede one or more goals per game, you're not going to win a Premier League. Manchester United have to look at that."They're not going to turf Maguire out. They've invested £80m, he's the cornerstone of the defence and the one they will build the defence around. So they need to find a partner for him. It's got to be someone of the physicality and profile of Eric Bailly. Someone who is quick, good in the air, strong and can cover Maguire one-on-one. But also someone who's going to get them up the pitch to allow them to play a bit higher."Lindelof's problem is Maguire and Maguire's problem is Lindelof. I think if you put Lindelof alongside Van Dijk at Liverpool, I think he's a really good player. He understands the game, he reads the game, he's a good defender. If he was alongside a Ferdinand or a Van Dijk, I think he'd make a great pair. The problem is he alongside somebody who's not the most mobile in Harry Maguire."The problem Lindelof has got is they've invested £80m on Maguire so they're going to have to put someone alongside him. They both seem to drop back a little bit and you need someone who can get them up the pitch."

(Photo by KIM KYUNG-HOON / POOL / AFP) TOKYO – Tokyo Olympic organizers could choose their new president as early as this week, a report said on Monday, after former chief Yoshiro Mori resigned over sexist remarks that provoked a global outcry. Local organizers need to “urgently” pick a new president with just five months left to prepare for the Games amid the COVID-19 pandemic and are setting up a selection committee made up of an equal number of men and women, the group’s chief executive Toshiro Muto said last week. The selection committee will hold its first meeting at the start of this week, Nippon TV reported, citing unidentified sources. Committee members will submit names of candidates in the days after and could select the new president as soon as this week, the report said. However, the process could carry over into next week if there is a large number of candidates, Nippon TV said. Among those being considered to succeed Mori are Olympic Minister Seiko Hashimoto, a pioneering female lawmaker and seven-time Olympian who is one of only two women in Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga’s cabinet, media have said. Hashimoto, born just days before the 1964 Tokyo Olympics, said on Friday she had not been asked to replace Mori. Others who have been floated to succeed Mori include Mikako Kotani, a two-time Olympian in synchronized swimming, now known as artistic swimming, who serves on the Japanese Olympic Committee, and Upper House lawmaker Tamayo Marukawa, a previous Olympics Minister. Media said another possible candidate was Daichi Suzuki, a former Olympic gold medalist backstroke swimmer who has served as commissioner of the Japan Sport Agency, an organisation aiming to promote sport nationwide. Another person being considered for the role was Koji Murofushi, a former Olympic gold medalist hammer thrower who has served as the agency’s commissioner since October after succeeding Suzuki. Mori’s handpicked successor, former Japan Football Association president Saburo Kawabuchi, 84, on Friday declined the job after publicly accepting it earlier, news reports said. The Summer Olympics, which were postponed last year due to the pandemic, are scheduled to open July 23. Read Next Don't miss out on the latest news and information.
